MSU’s Dr. Bruno Basso leads cutting-edge agricultural research through The Basso Lab, where his team uses advanced technologies like drones and satellites to monitor crop health, soil conditions, and climate factors. Based at sites like Jeff Sandborn’s farm in Portland, Michigan, the lab’s work helps farmers make data-driven decisions to improve yields while conserving water, fertilizer, and land. Dr. Basso brings together researchers from around the world, specializing in everything from soil science to genetics, with the shared goal of advancing sustainable and climate-resilient farming. With support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the lab’s innovations directly strengthen food systems by enabling farmers to produce more with fewer resources—all while protecting the environment.
